I'm grateful to Tania Chanter for giving me permission to use the wonderful painting "Shipwreck Coast" for the cover of my latest CD. You'll notice that the CD cover does not have titles across - I did this to preserve the art, only the online version has the album title embedded.

lyrics

Requiem for the City of New York

She’s an old fashioned girl
chrome and yellow hair set
perched upon a barstool downtown

“it’s a crazy life!”
she laughs and throws her head back
tobacco stains, red lipstick, and fake pearls

and standing in the corner
trying not to stare
he used to be a dancer
but now his feet are bare
once he was her lover
they partied night and day
but time and tide just washed it all away

She was a Broadway girl
brash and loud but charming
and when she smiled the city
couldn't sleep

but she’s tired now
and no-one likes a loser
so throw away, disposable and cheap

and standing in the corner
trying not to preach
a world looks on with pity
for something out of reach
all of us we loved her
we courted from afar
but time and tide just washed it all away
all of us we loved her
we idolised her star
but time and tide just washed it all away.
