The Ballad of Jago Trelawney Here lies the wreckage of the man they couldn't save all split with tar and brine in his watery grave time now has worn him down and smoothed his roughest edge salt bleached bony hands now grasp the greening threads The rock, the sea, the rising tide a harbour for the world we leave behind Nymph sailing Eastward, to Start Point - rocky crag watchman aloft spies revolutionary flag and here’s Cléopâtre heaving into view “let loose out canons boys! we’ll bid these French adieu!” The rock, the sea, the rising tide a harbour for the world we leave behind Jago Trelawney not twenty summers tall one of eighty Cornish tin men summoned to the port sworn now to duty in the service of King George and a share of prize and glory for every man aboard The rock, the sea, the rising tide a harbour for the world we leave behind Spar twisted tangled rig, as roundshot scorched its arc close-quartered cannonade ripped hulls and men apart and though at last King George’s men did claim the bloodied spoil ‘twas not before near equal loss Republican and Royal and here lies Trelawney, with lead shot in his eye and from his hand the keepsake rolls into the tide we’ll wrap him in the Ensign commit him to the sea was ‘ere a Cornishman to die in better company? The rock, the sea, the rising tide a harbour for the world we leave behind The rock, the sea, the rising tide a harbour for the world we leave behind © Simon Scardanelli 2019

Pearly Diving Sea We stood on the bridge and we gazed upon life as the foam flickered ribbon Flashed memories back from the old world But you stood your ground With your heart on your sleeve And your beggars delight And your belly alive with that soft pearl And “stay ’til the dawn” You cried to me “or leave by the light of this blood moon. I’ll keep thy precious birthstone ‘til ever we should part.” We stand in the water And pan for our gold And we sift through the mud That will softly deny us our fortune And you look at me With a smile of defeat And you offer your hand And I take it to mean we must leave soon And “stay ’til the dawn” I cry to you “and sing for the pearl that’s lost in the sea.” And “walk to the edge of the world with me To the pearly diving sea” And “walk to the edge of the world with me To the pearly diving sea” © Simon Scardanelli 2019

Different 04:26
Different there’s a hole in the wall to keep thy prayer book and candle hid but the scent of your faith doth linger go swiftly I’ll keep thy bid and we stand for love and we die for love There’s a knock on the door - from strangers gather your books and hide don’t whimper or cry - be silent from hunters I’ll keep your side and we lie for love and we die for love here’s a man with an old agenda a hatred for different folk you’d think we could learn from history but lessons just go up in smoke and we lie to love and we die to love and we lie to love and we die to love to love, to love, to love. © Simon Scardanelli 2018

Patience 05:29
Patience Patience is a virtue that I never had time to learn I’ve been too busy making up for lost time to wait my turn my best foot forward means one of them drags behind and I’d be one step ahead of the game if I could only find - - the starting line keeping up appearances is easy when you never get seen I can run around this house wearing nothing but a stupid grin and no-one really cares but still they need to criticise and tell me what I ought to do if I really want a better life - a better life but I’m just sitting here waiting for the lights to change they’ve been stuck on red and I really need to know why I’m just sitting here waiting for my life to change…to go my best ideas come too fast to write them down I got a novel in my head and a hundred songs kicking around most of them will never see the light of day but I’m much too insecure to ever throw them away but I’m just sitting here waiting for the lights to change they’ve been stuck on red and I really need to know why I’m just sitting here waiting for my life to change…to go I never follow fashion but that’s how you get to win jumping on a bandwagon seems be the next big thing but I wont ride in the back of a rusty car doesn't matter where it’s going it’s never going to be that far from anything but I’m just sitting here waiting for the lights to change they’ve been stuck on red and I really need to know why I’m just sitting here waiting for my life to change…to go yes I’m just sitting here waiting for the lights to change they’ve been stuck on red and I really need to know why I’m just sitting here waiting for my life to change…to go © 2018 Simon Scardanelli

Human Nature you laugh at science - call it a conspiracy say climate change is not caused by mankind when all around you forests burn and oceans rise don’t understand how you can be so blind after all it’s only human nature keeps us in the dark and the world will just keep turning when we’ve torn it all apart you say these things don’t indicate disaster and I don't hear you sounding the alarm but we are moments from the point of no return won’t navigate this storm before it’s calm after all it’s only human nature blame the other guy and the world will just keep spinning through an ever angry sky will nothing stop this race to our calamity these psychopaths, these demi-gods, that rule are playing fast and lose with everything and us the end game of the wealthiest of fools evolution tells us nothing more than what we need to know we’re just passing through and planet earth will love us when we go after all it’s only human nature keeps us in the dark and the world will just keep turning when we’ve torn it all apart © 2019 Simon Scardanelli/Musica Scardanelli

A Simple Case Of Time face the North it’s time to go the players gathered at the steps below the tables turn and don’t pay out they play against you the eyes go round like flashing spurs in red and black their faces blur the clatter jaw of rack and ruin a simple case of time’s own cruel trick or treat - a flowered fate you’d never want to be your favourite thing each line of us is growing old lay down beside me when my bones are cold and let me see the light and bring it down and burn it up and see the light and never see the world, and never see the world again. © 2019 Simon Scardanelli/Musica Scardanelli

Star City 02:51
Star City I got a temporary situation Living on the cheaper side of town I thought about living in Star City But I just don't get things done I just never ever get done I wake up every morning to a fog horn the sound of breaking backs and rusty chains so eat a wormy biscuit put my boots on and wonder who the hell I’m gonna blame I’ll find out soon enough and take his name. but no-one seems to want to take my offer responsibility’s a heavy weight so thinking I should go and see my doctor I lie a little just to keep him sweet I lie a little just to get my treat. That’s how I ended up with all this linen cleaner than it ever needs to be the nurses here are really quite appealing except the one who meds me up at tea but I’m honest I don't think that he likes me but now I’m living on this desert island and no-one seems to notice that I’m free although it’s kind off strange and disconcerting there’s always someone here to bring me tea and God believes in someone but not me Yeah God believes in someone but not me I thought I had a reason to be cheerful Thought I had reason to be glad Seems it wasn't just this medication really it’s the world that makes me sad really it’s the world that makes me sad funny fucking world is going mad © Simon Scardanelli/Musica Scardanelli 2018

Requiem for the City of New York She’s an old fashioned girl chrome and yellow hair set perched upon a barstool downtown “it’s a crazy life!” she laughs and throws her head back tobacco stains, red lipstick, and fake pearls and standing in the corner trying not to stare he used to be a dancer but now his feet are bare once he was her lover they partied night and day but time and tide just washed it all away She was a Broadway girl brash and loud but charming and when she smiled the city couldn't sleep but she’s tired now and no-one likes a loser so throw away, disposable and cheap and standing in the corner trying not to preach a world looks on with pity for something out of reach all of us we loved her we courted from afar but time and tide just washed it all away all of us we loved her we idolised her star but time and tide just washed it all away. © 2018 Simon Scardanelli

about

If Make Us Happy was a return to my folkier roots,  The Rock, the Sea, the Rising Tide goes to the soil.  When I first began writing songs on the guitar I played almost exclusively fingerstyle.  I took some classical lessons at 16, but quickly dropped them in favour of joining a rock ’n roll band.… over the past few years I’ve been drawn again to that style of playing and hope that you’ll find this collection of songs intriguing and rewarding.

I’m sure you know how important the lyric - the narrative - is to me, and I’ve really enjoyed writing these stories. Created from both imagined and real life experiences, I’ve weaved them into the musical landscape of this album. The title of the album is taken from the chorus of The Ballad of Jago Trelawney; a story and character I've based on a real sea battle that took place in 1793 between the English Nymph & French Cleopatre.

I've kept the arrangements sparse - with just a violin and cello on two songs, and my old school recorder and Turkish Cumbus on another (oh and the wheezy old harmonium I found on a dump), mostly it's just guitar and voice.  It’s been a challenge to “under-produce” this album, and I’ve stuck with performance over technique on a couple of tracks which challenged my OCD as a sound engineer and audio perfectionist. It’s always difficult being the writer, performer, engineer and producer - as a self-releasing artist that’s the way it is - hard to know sometimes when enough is enough, or when it ain’t for that matter! Still I wanted to let this album be raw and real.

As always, creating an album is a labour of love, and it’s hard to let go of the process. But let go I must, so I can move on to the next.

I’m indebted to Tania Chanter for allowing me to use her wonderful painting Shipwreck Coast for the CD cover. As always I looked far and wide to find the right picture for the album, and found Tania’s work (she lives in New Zealand) and this particular painting a perfect match for the tone of the album.
