Whirlwind

Whirlwind
We were standing in the middle of a whirlwind
trying to keep our feet on the ground
there were maps and papers all across the table
some of them had marks to be found - yeah,
some of them had clues to be found
Then we came across a man who would be righteous
and righteous was the name of the game
he was surrounded by a gang of freedom fighters
but no-one ever told us his name - no,
no one ever told us his name.
we were huddled in backroom where they organised the partners and
they gave us a number to call
and I remember you
exactly (as you do)
and wondered when you knew
we would be saved
We were standing in the middle of a whirlwind
trying to keep our feet on the ground yeah
trying to keep our feet on the ground
Then a truck arrived to take us to a safe house
somewhere we would never be found
but they kicked us all out just beyond the border
told us to go deep underground - yeah
told to go on underground
when we surfaced we were standing by the quayside
staring at a row of broken boats
they were making up the crew to sail at high tide
and you and I were press ganged by a vote - yeah
you and I we lost by just one vote
so we piled onto that frigate that was never meant for sea
although the captain was a man of the world
and I remember you
exactly (as you do)
and wondered when you knew
we would be saved
We were standing in the middle of a whirlwind
trying to keep our feet on the ground yeah
trying to keep our feet on the ground yeah
trying to keep our feet on the ground.

Talk About Glory

TALK ABOUT GLORY
I’m just sitting here
getting fat drink a beer
think about life as it disappears
I’m just lazy
I never watch the evening news
it’s full of bad things that give me the blues
it’s crazy, makes me mad.
I’d rather be a five star general on a battlefield
talk about glory that’s a life you could be proud to live
I’m not bragging here
I’ve been everywhere
no, not abroad who’d want to live there anyway
it’s far to hot
I read it on a poster
or was it on a coaster?
I know about things you’d never understand
cos I read a lot - and I smoke pot....
I’d rather be Duncan Bannatyne
he has a lot of money and a car that shines
I’d rather be a five star general on a battlefield
talk about glory that’s a life you could be proud to live
I nearly had a girlfriend
very nice but in the end
I had to call it off
she came on far too rude
didn’t like Star Wars, Call Of Duty,
Game of Thrones
tried to teach her but she did not have the
aptitude, or the skill.
I’d rather be an astronaut in space
they get a lot of women with that chiseled face
I’d rather be Duncan Bannatyne
he has a lot of money and a car that shines
I’d rather be a five star general on a battlefield
talk about glory that’s a life you could be proud to live
I’d rather be President Vladimir Putin
He has a lot of fun sticking it to the UN
I’d rather be an astronaut in space
they get a lot of women with that chiseled face
I’d rather be Duncan Banatyne
he has a lot of money and a car that shines
I’d rather be a five star general on a battlefield
talk about glory that’s a life you could be proud to live

Annual General Meeting

Annual General Meeting
All the lights in the ballroom
are burning like a thousand wells
lit up by the spark of crusaders
whose mission is to see you burn in hell
still you take another swig of Dom Perignon
or Krystal or whatever gets you high
and drowns out your baying shareholders
while you set your dogs lose in the theatre of lies
did you say,
we’d be sorry
if we all
stood our ground
there’s a war
coming to you
and here’s that sound
so let’s toast another year of prosperity
against the markets we have prevailed
set aside the fact, that we’re government backed because we’re just too big to fail
and let’s crush another union and take away freedoms
in this fucked up welfare state
you don’t need the net of survival -
a bed or a roof or a square meal when you’ve got
the charity plate
did you say,
we’d be sorry
if we all
stood our ground
there’s a war
coming to you
and here’s that sound

Hopes In My Pocket

Hopes In My Pocket
I got hopes in my pocket
I got worlds in my head
I got some dreams in my suitcase
and something else in my bed
I got a shortage of reason
I can't tell you why
if I need something to believe in
I'll take the devil's side, I'll take the devil's side, I'll take the devil's side
CHORUS
Oh no, don’t tell me something I already know
I got a thing for disaster
seems to follow me around
got a black dog for a house mate
well I never wanted to be found
I must have been out there walking
in some sheet metal rain
poor little mutt he was howling
I thought it would ease my pain, thought it would ease my pain, thought it would ease my pain...
Oh no, don’t tell me something I already know
no, don’t tell me something I already know
I got more than I asked for
but I got less than I need
I got an abundance of cravings
They're going to feed my greed
it get's me up in the morning
this feeling of malcontent
but everything ends with a question
when nothing is heaven sent
Oh no, don’t tell me something I already know
no, don’t tell me something I already know
I used to work with the Robots
and they were beautiful
still ticking at 5 in the morning
with the sand room full
I would have been smoking those Marlboros
and drinking cranberry juice
I wonder what happened to Jaynee?
the ketamine set her loose...
I could have been somebody's brainchild
I could have been nobody's fool
and many's the time I've been attracted
to the wrong damn school
the school of hopeless causes
the school of follow me down
to the bottom of a mindfield
I'll wear the dunces crown
Oh no, don’t tell me something I already know
no, don’t tell me something I already know
Oh no, don’t tell me something I already know
don’t tell me something I already know

Make Us Happy

Make Us Happy
We got things that’ll make you feel happy
take a little pill gonna make you real snappy
something in the air...
we got a life of picnic and leisure
take another tab gonna give you all a pleasure
hope you’re high, it’s gonna be fine....
no matter what you got there’s always something better
and everything you want you can get it on the never never
never never gonna pay
oh it’s a strange world
looks like it’s all on TV
see someone famous
living a version of you and me
We’re working pretty hard but we never have a dollar
everything I get I’m gonna blow it on another
big TV, to watch the world go by.
No matter what I watch there’s always something better
I’m thanking Rupert Murdoch for creating all my leisure
Time machine - can’t be far behind.
I want to take a trip but I can do it in the ether
memories are better and souvenirs are cheaper - stay at home
take a selfie with the wife
oh it’s a strange world
looks like we’re all on TV
saw myself famous
living a version of you not me
the government says that they need to keep an eye on
everything you think cos they want to keep a spy on
you and me - “we have reason to believe..”
terror in the sky revolution in the gutter
look at the news - it’s full of scary nutters
shock TV - keep you all afraid
so do a little shopping if it makes you feel better
we’re keeping you alive and we’re working on the weather
carbon tax, that’ll do the job
Planet Earth? Couldn’t give it away
Planet Earth? Couldn’t make it pay
oh it’s a strange world
looks like we’re all on TV
saw myself blameless
living a version of you not me

Sweet Loretta

Sweet Loretta
I’m not the son of a miner or a boy who was raised
on script and prayer
oh but I was born to be
disconnected with my place in the world
I could have been gospel-true at heart
oh but faith deserts me
Oh - sweet Loretta
sweet Loretta sing to me
I been hiding out with some of those good old songs for years
Loretta and me.
Woke up drunk in Kentucky one morning with this strange sense of deja vu
oh turns out I was never there
But everything else I’ve experienced is fiction and I was recognised at birth
oh, then I was made to disappear
Oh - sweet Loretta
sweet Loretta sing to me
I been hiding out with some of those good old songs for years
Loretta and me.
(spoken)
back in ’82 I hitch-hiked all the way from San Diego to Kentucky
I was shivering in the dessert in the dead of night at Gila Bend Arizona until a Christian trucker picked me up and took me on to Texas where he fed me in a Diner straight out of a Coen Brothers movie. An air force pilot kept a gun in the glove box and a prayer on his windshield, some other crazy guy told me that “one day all cars would fly” - and the highway patrolman told me to take the Bus
Oh - sweet Loretta
sweet Loretta sing to me
I been hiding out with some of those good old songs for years
Loretta and me.

Truth Seems Stranger

Truth Seems Stranger To Me
I was looking at the world through the bottom of a glass
and it looked pretty fine to me
a little fuzzy in the middle where my eyes don’t meet
but to tell you the truth
that’s not what I wanted to see
I was looking at the world through a ring of smoke
and it looked pretty high to me
a little weird around the edges where my mind won’t reach
but to tell you the truth
it wouldn’t be the buddha I seek
I was looking at the world through a telescope
that was rolled from a five dollar bill
if things go better with a little bit of hope
you better cut to the chase
and pray to your god that they will
I was looking at the world through a prophecy
and it looked pretty strange to me
with a hole in the middle
where they never solve the riddle
but to tell you the truth
the truth seems stranger to me

Days That Lie

Days That Lie
I picked the holes in the score on the days that lied
count out the precious that I hold as the rules divide
the animals came in four by fours, made camp in the middle of the green
cut out the heart and the body soon learns to die.
Picked me up on a couple of words of war
me and the battle-done boys trying to settle the score
threw me in the back of a butcher's van, hit me with a lightning rod
to tell you the truth I really don't want to say more.
Those days
days that lie
those days
days that lie
Well I broke free to the strains of a victory song
crept to the edge of the camp then I was gone
took what I could carry - which was nothing much at all
headed for the river but the boat won't take me home
I walked for miles in the hills at a dangerous pace
with stones in my shoes and a wind that burned my face
I was buckled blue and all used up
they'd hung me out to die
cut me from the bottom of the list in a favoured race
Those days
days that lie
those days
days that lie
You can't buy silence and you can't sell a peace of mind
and a man can't trade what he's never had the luck to find
so put me in the middle of a hurricane
I'll never be a willow tree
better to be broken than bend to a crooked line

Dagger

DAGGER
I hold a dagger for the days I’ve done
cuts and bruises on the heel
so many times I’ve swung the blade around
in better times I’ve had them killed
it’s either them or me won’t see the week out
I have a story for the places gone
and every one of them is true
I left them screaming in a raging fire
the Devil made me do....
the Devil made me do....
it’s either them or me won’t see the week out
I know a place where daggers live and die
and birds paint black across the blue
and red-eyed madmen keep the wolves at bay
the Devil lives in you
the Devil lives in you....
It’s either you or me or he won’t see the week out
It’s either you or me won’t see the week out
